Adding and indexing files

Files live in Knowledge. Getting them in is the easy part. The thing worth understanding is indexing, because that is what lets Metir search inside them.

It writes a summary and tags too

Files uploading, indexing, then becoming searchable
  1. Drop files into Knowledge
  2. Indexing starts on its own
  3. Green means Metir can search inside it
  4. It writes a summary and tags too

Adding files

Upload from your computer, or import from Google Drive or OneDrive. See cloud drives.

Indexing

A file has to be indexed before Deep Research or Askcan search inside it. Most files index by themselves shortly after upload. You can also index on demand from the file's menu, or from the Deep Research picker.

Indexing states

  • Green, indexed and ready.
  • Yellow, indexing now.
  • Grey, not indexed.
  • Red, indexing failed. A file that produced no readable text is marked failed rather than pretending to be ready.

What indexing gives you

Beyond search, Metir generates a title, a short summary and tags for each file. That is why files show a preview line and tag chips the way notes do. See organising Knowledge.

Where files show up

Knowledge has five tabs: Recent, Notes, Files, Artifacts and Trash.

Scanned PDFs and images are read with vision, so they can be indexed too. A photo of a whiteboard is searchable.
