TikTok AI Shopping Assistant and Buy Direct: Agentic Commerce

TikTok added an AI Shopping Assistant and one-click Buy Direct checkout in the For You feed. How it works, who built it and where it fits in agentic commerce.

TikTok AI Shopping Assistant and Buy Direct: Agentic Commerce

On October 5, 2026, TikTok announced two shopping products in a newsroom post timed to Advertising Week New York: a conversational Shopping Assistant and a one-click in-app checkout called Buy Direct, which lets people buy from a brand straight from the For You feed, according to TechCrunch and The Next Web. TikTok groups both under the label Agentic Commerce and says it is building them with Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe. This piece explains what the two features do, how they connect to the open protocols now shaping AI shopping, and how TikTok's approach compares with what OpenAI and Google have tried.

What TikTok Announced on October 5

Shopping Assistant is described by TikTok as a conversational AI agent. Per the company's announcement, quoted by PYMNTS, it "provides real-time AI-powered shopping guidance like product details, shipping, sizing, availability and purchasing all within one conversation." TikTok also says the assistant understands context and remembers a user's preferences and needs throughout a conversation. Unite.AI reports that it runs as a chat window on product pages inside TikTok's in-app browser.

Buy Direct is the checkout half. According to Unite.AI, it offers one-click purchasing through stored payment methods and saved addresses, plus in-app order tracking, while the brand remains the merchant of record. That last detail matters: Buy Direct is distinct from TikTok Shop, the marketplace TikTok launched in the US in September 2023. Adweek describes it as a way to buy directly from brands within the app, separate from TikTok Shop.

Both features were announced alongside a wider set of advertiser tools, reported by Yahoo Finance and The Next Web:

  • Agentic Leads, an agent that captures and qualifies high-intent prospects through direct messages and lead forms.
  • TikTok Ad Network, launching in the US for the first time, extending campaigns to roughly 400,000 third-party apps.
  • Model Context Protocol connectors that let marketers' AI tools, including Claude and Perplexity, reach TikTok's ads systems.
  • Expansions to Smart+ and GMV Max, TikTok's automated campaign products.

On availability, the reporting is not fully aligned. Adweek says the features are beginning to roll out to US users and brands. PYMNTS and Unite.AI describe access as eligibility-based testing for advertisers, and The Next Web notes no general launch date was given. The safest reading is a limited US rollout that brands opt into.

We're trying to move people from discovery all the way through to action, and there's a lot that we can do to bring AI to that journey.

How Buy Direct Works: the Protocol Layer

The most technically interesting detail is underneath. According to PYMNTS and Unite.AI, Buy Direct requires the merchant to integrate the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). UCP is an open specification that Google announced on January 11, 2026, at the National Retail Federation show. The Google Developers Blog says it was developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, is endorsed by more than 20 partners including Adyen, Mastercard, Stripe and Visa, and standardizes "the full commerce journey" from discovery to order management. It can be reached through APIs, Agent2Agent (A2A) or the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

In plain terms, UCP gives an AI surface a common way to read a merchant's catalog, run a checkout and hand off the order, without a custom integration per retailer. Google built the first implementation for checkout in AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app. TikTok adopting a protocol that Google originated is a notable second-order effect: it suggests the checkout plumbing is converging even as the companies on top of it compete for the shopper.

The other major standard is the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), which Stripe released with OpenAI on September 29, 2025. ACP introduced a Shared Payment Token, which lets an application initiate a payment "without exposing the buyer's payment credentials," scoped to one merchant and cart total. Stripe is a named partner on TikTok's launch and an endorser of UCP, which places it on both sides of the standards question. For a deeper look at that layer, see our explainer on Stripe's agentic commerce stack.

TikTok Shop by the Numbers

TikTok enters agentic commerce with an existing commerce business. Market research firm eMarketer estimates TikTok Shop generated about $15.8 billion in US sales in 2025, roughly 18% of US social commerce, figures cited by both TechCrunch and The Next Web. eMarketer's November 2025 forecast, as reported by Data Explained, shows how quickly that figure grew from a standing start.

Two caveats apply. The 2026 and 2027 bars are forecasts made before the year began, not reported results. And these numbers measure TikTok Shop, the marketplace. Buy Direct sends orders to brands that remain the merchant of record, so sales through it may be counted differently, and TikTok has not said how it will report them.

TikTok also cites 54 million Americans who say they bought a product after watching TikTok videos and $81 billion in GDP generated for US businesses, figures reported by TechCrunch. Unite.AI attributes the GDP figure to a report by PF Global. These are company-supplied numbers rather than independent audits.

The Agentic Commerce Race So Far

TikTok is not the first large platform to try to close the gap between recommendation and purchase with AI, and the track record so far is mixed.

Companies with a stake in AI-driven shopping in 2026.

OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT in September 2025, starting with US Etsy sellers and promising more than a million Shopify merchants, per Stripe's announcement. In March 2026 the company changed course. TechCrunch reported that OpenAI was deprioritizing Instant Checkout as a stand-alone feature, quoting the company: "The initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide." CNBC described the replacement as a product discovery and comparison experience, with merchants using their own checkout. OpenAI has since kept building on the discovery side, adding virtual try-on to ChatGPT shopping on October 1, 2026, per TechCrunch.

Google is pursuing checkout inside AI Mode and the Gemini app through UCP, and in late September began testing purchases from Flipkart in India, with a Buy button on select listings, according to TechCrunch. We covered that test in Google AI Mode agentic shopping in India.

Meta and Amazon illustrate the friction. In September, Amazon blocked Meta's Muse AI agent from shopping on Amazon.com, showing an error that "continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon's Conditions of Use," per TechCrunch. Our analysis of that standoff covers the stakes. Meanwhile, DoorDash took a messaging-first route with a text-to-order agent in Apple Messages.

Why TikTok's Position Is Different

The comparison with ChatGPT is instructive because the two start from opposite ends of the funnel. ChatGPT's shopping began with intent: a user who asks a question already wants something, and the open problem was convincing merchants to integrate and users to complete payment in a chat window. TikTok begins with discovery. Most people scrolling the For You feed are not shopping, but TikTok's existing business shows that a large number of them buy anyway.

That has three implications worth separating:

  1. Supply. Buy Direct leans on commerce platforms rather than asking brands to build bespoke integrations. With Shopify, Salesforce and Shoplazza as partners and UCP as the interface, the integration burden on each brand may be lower than for a bespoke checkout, though TikTok has not disclosed how many brands are live.
  2. Merchant control. Keeping the brand as merchant of record addresses a recurring retailer concern in agentic commerce: who owns the customer relationship, the returns and the data. It is the same question at the center of the Amazon and Meta dispute.
  3. Attention as the scarce asset. For TikTok, the assistant is also a retention tool. TechCrunch frames the goal as keeping product discovery and purchase inside the app rather than sending users to external tools or competitors.

There are open questions on the other side. A conversational assistant that "remembers" preferences raises the usual questions about what data is retained and how it is used for ad targeting, which the coverage reviewed here does not address. Accuracy is another: an assistant answering sizing, shipping and stock questions is only as good as the merchant data it reads, and how often that data is refreshed has not been described.

What to Watch Next

  • Rollout scope. Whether Buy Direct moves from eligibility-based testing to broad availability, and whether it expands beyond the US.
  • Brand adoption. The number of merchants live on Buy Direct is the clearest test of whether UCP lowers integration cost enough to draw brands in at scale.
  • Conversion data. TikTok has not published conversion or order figures for either feature. Any disclosure would show whether conversational help raises purchase rates in a feed built for entertainment.
  • Protocol convergence. UCP and ACP now each have large backers, and some companies, Stripe among them, support both. Whether they merge, interoperate or remain parallel will shape how many surfaces a merchant must integrate.
  • Agent access disputes. If shopping agents multiply, more retailers may follow Amazon in deciding which agents can transact on their sites.

The broader pattern is that no single model or surface owns the shopper. Recommendations now come from feeds, chat assistants and search, each running on different AI systems. For teams working across those systems, a model-agnostic workspace such as Metir AI is one way to compare how different models handle the same research or buying question.
