OpenAI is reportedly working to raise up to $30 billion at a $1.25 trillion pre-money valuation, according to TechCrunch's report on October 22, 2026, which draws on CNBC. The round is reportedly led by Coatue with investors from the United Arab Emirates, and it would make OpenAI the most valuable private company ever. The number is lower than the roughly $1.4 trillion Bloomberg reported a month earlier, and none of it has been confirmed: OpenAI declined to comment, and TechCrunch says terms are still being negotiated and could change.
The movement between the two reports is the analytical story. A smaller headline valuation does not necessarily mean weaker demand, but it does tell us something about how pricing is being negotiated.
What was reported
| Detail | Reported | Source basis |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Up to $30 billion | TechCrunch citing CNBC |
| Valuation | $1.25 trillion pre-money | TechCrunch citing CNBC |
| Lead | Coatue, with UAE investors | TechCrunch citing CNBC |
| Possible link | UAE funding may be tied to a deal for more computing capacity | CNBC, via TechCrunch |
| Earlier report | $30 billion at $1.4 trillion, September 29 | Bloomberg, via TechCrunch |
| Last round | March, $852 billion post-money | TechCrunch |
| IPO | Confidential paperwork filed in June; the round may come before any IPO | TechCrunch |
All figures come from anonymous sources cited by CNBC and Bloomberg rather than official announcements. Our earlier analysis of the $1.4 trillion report covers the original context.
Arithmetic worth keeping straight
Reported valuations, in billions of US dollars
Figures mix pre-money and post-money bases, labelled on each bar. Round terms in October are reported and not confirmed.
Sources: TechCrunch (October 22 and September 29, 2026), CNBC, Bloomberg. The Anthropic figure is the valuation TechCrunch cites for its May raise.
Adding $30 billion to a $1.25 trillion pre-money valuation implies a post-money value of about $1.28 trillion. That is our arithmetic, not a reported figure. The distinction between pre-money and post-money matters when comparing with the March valuation of $852 billion, which TechCrunch gives on a post-money basis: on a like-for-like basis, the implied step from March to the reported October post-money is roughly 1.5 times.
Why the number may have moved
The sources do not explain the change, so any explanation is inference. Three readings fit the facts:
| Reading | What would support it | What would weaken it |
|---|---|---|
| Negotiation | Lead investors pushing on price in a large, concentrated round | Evidence of competing term sheets at the higher number |
| Market conditions | Broader repricing of AI assets | A stable market over the same weeks |
| Structure | A different mix of investors, including UAE capital possibly tied to compute | Disclosure that the two reports describe different instruments |
None of these can be confirmed from public reporting, and they are not mutually exclusive.
A lower number in a second report is a data point about negotiation, not a verdict on the company.
Metir analysis
The Anthropic comparison
TechCrunch notes that Anthropic raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation in May and filed confidential IPO paperwork in June. CNBC reports Anthropic is seeking a valuation of $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion for its public debut, and that its public S-1 could come soon. Our own coverage of the leaked prospectus reports addresses that side. Both labs have reportedly filed confidentially for public listings and are being priced in the same range, which makes each lab's valuation a reference point for the other.
AnthropicThe UAE and compute link
CNBC, as relayed by TechCrunch, reports the UAE funding could be tied to a deal for more computing capacity from the UAE. If so, part of the capital would be linked to capacity. The reporting does not give terms, so the share of the round tied to compute, if any, is unknown.

What it means for builders
A private valuation is not a statement about any product's price or availability, and terms may still change. For teams building on AI, a practical response is to avoid single-vendor dependence rather than to forecast any one lab's finances. Using several providers behind one interface, as Metir allows, keeps that option open.
What to watch
- Official confirmation. A close, a term sheet or a filing would replace the anonymous-source figures.
- Final valuation basis. Whether the closing number is pre-money or post-money, and how it compares with $1.25 trillion.
- Compute terms. Any disclosed link between UAE capital and capacity.
- IPO sequencing. Whether this round precedes a public filing, as TechCrunch notes is possible.
